Garage owner wins planning battle to continue business from home

A garage owner in Hyndburn has successfully retained the use of part of his property as a garage after a planning committee overturned the council officer’s recommendation for rejection.

Tom McVicker faced opposition from nearby residents who raised concerns about noise, traffic, and other potential disturbances. However, another resident, Marilyn Threlfall, testified that the garage had not caused any problems during its operation.

Cllr Dave Parkins, chairman of the planning committee, advocated for the garage, emphasising the lack of previous complaints and the potential economic impact of closing the business. He argued that the garage could continue to operate with appropriate conditions in place.

The planning committee ultimately voted in favour of the application, approving it subject to agreed conditions. This decision allows Tom McVicker to continue his business, ensuring the continued viability of his auto-repair shop.

While some residents expressed disappointment with the decision, the committee’s vote reflects a balance between community concerns and the economic benefits of supporting local businesses.
