Mercedes-Benz C-Class cooling fan problem solved thanks to OEM-trained master technician guidance

London independent praises Autologic for time saving benefits

Browning’s Garage has praised Autologic for its time-saving benefits and shared a recent example of how one of Autologic’s Mercedes OEM-trained master technicians helped overcome an issue on a 2006 Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

The C-Class displayed a coolant warning light on the instrument cluster and its cooling fan was permanently on.

Miles Browning, director at Brownings Garage contacted an OEM-trained master technician through his AutologicLive service for guidance on how to repair the fault.

Miles provided Kevin Hardy, one of Autologic’s Mercedes OEM-trained master technicians, details of the fault and fault codes found, which included P1636-004 ‘check engine and air conditioning electric suction fan with integrated control (M4/7): signal wire open circuit’.

The fix

Miles was told to check the following four wires:

  • Pin 2 at fan = 10mm red =perm 12v live
  • Pin 1 = earth
  • Pin 3 = blk/red = 12v ign live
  • Pin 4 signal wire to ECU pin 57 plug 2 at engine ECU

Kevin then suggested that Miles load test the signal wire and substitute it.

In terms of voltage on this particular wire, he should expect to see 1.0 – 1.7 volts to get the fan to be stationary and with no actuation, and 8.0 – 10.5 volts which will ask the ECU to go to maximum.

Miles was also advised to look at the signal wire out of the engine ECU, and also at the other end of the fan module to see if the engine cannot see continuity on the signal wire.

As a result of following some step by step guidance from Kevin, Miles was able to identify and find the broken signal wire.

After replacing the wire, the fault was rectified, and Miles was then free to tackle his next job of the day.

Miles said: “Thanks to Kevin’s help, I found the signal wire broken as suspected, behind the nearside-front inner wheel arch just by the washer bottle.

“Using Autologic Live saved me valuable time on this job.”

Brownings Garage use the Autologic diagnostic system on a weekly basis to resolve a wide range of coding and programming issues.
