A couple from Bothwell have lost their vehicle after a fire destroyed a garage in Uddingston on Monday. Lakini Bolton had dropped off the black Ford Focus for an MOT appointment shortly before the building was engulfed in flames.
The garage owner confirmed to the owners that the vehicle was on a ramp inside the premises when the incident occurred. Lakini stated:
“It’s gone. He told me the good news is it will be paid for by his insurance – but the bad news is he doesn’t know how long it will take.”
The fire service worked through the night to protect an adjacent petrol station and a local supermarket. One individual received treatment for smoke inhalation, but no other casualties were reported. The vehicle, nicknamed “Vadar”, was used by Lakini for commuting to her shifts at a Glasgow hospital and held sentimental value as the car in which she passed her driving test.
The impact of the blaze extends to the workshop staff; mechanic and MOT tester David Mills lost his complete collection of tools in the fire. A crowdfunding campaign has been established to assist him in replacing the equipment he had acquired over several years.
Police Scotland have indicated that they do not believe the fire was started deliberately. A formal investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the outbreak. Future updates regarding the incident and local service disruptions may be found via regional news outlets.
