Drivers across the country are suffering stress when taking their vehicle for an MOT with some describing the process as “a hassle”, survey findings released this week show.

A poll of 2,001 UK motorists commissioned by Co-op Insurance, found that 59 per cent said the MOT test is stressful.

20 per cent of respondents described the annual test as “a hassle and too much effort” while 19 per cent said they struggle to find time to take their car to a garage.

Motorists can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT in Britain.

Department for Transport figures show 35 people were killed and 411 were seriously injured in accidents on Britain’s roads in 2017 when a vehicle defect was a contributory factor.

“A car can pass an MOT, but could be un-roadworthy hours later”

Dean Adams, spokesman for Scrap Car Comparison said: “A roadworthy vehicle is critical for all of us on or near the roads.

“The problem we face is a car can pass an MOT, but could be un-roadworthy hours later and that person will then not check their car over for another 12 months – that’s potentially 12 months of dangerous driving.

“It’s understandable drivers worrying about an MOT with high bills or potentially losing a car, but it’s paramount for the safety of all that our roads are as safe as they can be.”

Some of the tests are stressful for me as well! The trouble is that so many drivers think that if the car goes and mostly stops then it’s fine and safe. Even when you show them the worn ball joint, the corroded brake pipe or the broken spring most of them still think I’m just trying to make them spend money.
I don’t how you change the owners attitudes but the fact is, at a guess, around half of them have the wrong attitude to safety!
