Real fixes from SureTrack

Real Fixes from the SureTrack® expert information resource are documented issues from actual shop repair orders and community discussions. Read on to see how SureTrack can help you correct issues that are not easily diagnosed using OEM information alone. SureTrack is currently available free with the purchase of a current Snap-on® diagnostic software version.

This fix illustrates the power of the SureTrack community to quickly help a fellow tech solve a problem. A SureTrack community member had a 2014 BMW in the shop with a check engine light on. They posed the question to the community, and with the help of fellow community members, they were able to resolve the issue quickly.

The following Community Fix summarizes the interaction between members of the community that led to the solution.

Title
11A002, Replaced Fuel Injection High Pressure Pump

Complaint
The customer states the check engine light is on.

Diagnostic Steps Performed/Parts Replaced
Connected a scan tool and found code 11A002 – High Pressure Fuel, Plausibility Pressure Too Low. Used the scan tool to monitor fuel rail pressure at idle and at 1,500 RPM and found the fuel pressure values were below specifications. Inspected the fuel system for signs of leaks or porous hoses and no faults were found. Removed the fuel filter for a visual inspection and found the filter was restricted with debris. Replaced the fuel filter and connected a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail, started the engine and found the measured pressure was below specifications. Connected a low amperage current probe to the fuel injectors, monitored the current waveform on a lab scope and found no faults were present. Used a multimeter to measure the resistance of the fuel pressure sensor and found the measured resistance was within specifications. Using the lab scope, back probed the fuel pressure sensor signal circuit at the control module and found the signal parameter was present, which indicated the sensor and circuitry were functional.

Cause
The results of these tests verified the fuel injection pump was faulty.

Correction
Replaced the fuel injection high pressure pump, cleared codes, performed a road test and verified the vehicle operated properly. The check engine light did not illuminate and no fault codes returned.
