The cost of an MOT test in Northern Ireland could increase from £30.50 to £38 under plans unveiled by the Department for Infrastructure.

An eight-week public consultation proposes the first rise in most vehicle test fees since 2005, along with plans to increase the cost of a practical driving test. The Department for Infrastructure says the proposed new fees would help the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) to cover the cost of providing services.

A new £16m test centre and operational depot for the DVA will open at Hydebank in Belfast later this year.

Changes to MOT test fees included in the consultation include:

  • Cars and light goods vehicles: from £30.50 to £38
  • Motorcycles: from £22 to £34
  • Taxis: from £138.50 to £147

In a statement, the Department for Infrastructure said: “Following the consultation, all responses will be analysed before recommendations are made to the Minister for Infrastructure.”

The consultation opened on 8 June and will close at 5pm on 3 August 2023.
