A pickup being pursued by three police cars, whilst loaded with mattresses and other household goods, was brought to a stop by a quick-thinking bus driver who managed to block it’s path, reports Express.co.uk.
According to eye witnesses, the truck had been driving on the wrong side of the road, colliding with several vehicles during the pursuit through Sidcup at about 12.30pm.
Before the pickup had chance to cause any further damage, a female bus driver pulled out in front of the vehicle, stopping it in its tracks.
Police then used their vehicles to ensnare the rogue vehicle, however the driver had fled on foot; a man has since been arrested.
Praising the actions of the bus driver, saying they “could have potentially [saved] many lives”, Tracey Emmerton had just left her seven-month-old baby with relatives when the pickup sped past her on Blackfen Road.
Lucky escape
The 32-year-old said: “It seems the bus driver has pulled in front of the van to stop it and then it was blocked either side by the police cars.
“Thankfully, but gods knows how, ours was missed, [but] all the cars in front who had pulled in still got hit.
“The truck was using both sides of the road.
“It didn’t seems as if anyone was hurt but I can’t be sure.
“We had just dropped off our seven-month-old baby for a sleep over and nanny and grandad’s, so we are so lucky to have not been hit and not have him in the car.”
No reported injuries
“Police began an authorised pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle that failed to stop for officers at approximately 12.38pm.
“During the course of the pursuit, the suspect vehicle collided with a number of stationary vehicles,” said a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police.
“There have been no reported injuries.”
