A woman has been slammed by critics after appearing on popular daytime television show This Morning to express her opinion that car parks should offer wider, “women-only” parking bays.
Rae Martin was branded “sexist” after suggesting that British car parks should adopt similar provisions of those currently used in China, where women can access larger spaces which are specifically designated for female drivers, reported the Daily Mail.
Heavily criticised by This Morning viewers, Martin describes herself as a “rubbish driver” and went on to suggest that women are worse at driving as they are often “distracted by their children”.
Viewers took to Twitter to express their outrage, one user wrote: “Female only parking spaces has literally made my skin crawl, if you can’t park in a parking space you need more practise, not a bigger space.
“And it’s not just women who can’t park!”
Martin defended her views, saying: “I’m rubbish, I can’t park to save my life.
“I just think ‘thank you for giving me a bigger parking spaces, it’s going to keep my insurance premium down.'”
Motoring journalist Jess Shanahan also disagreed with Martin’s views, commenting: “I do think it’s sexist.
“There are people out there who can park well, and people who can’t.
“The stereotype that women can’t park well will be furthered with these spaces.”
