Police in Northern Ireland are investigating evidence that Driving and Vehicle Agency staff have taken bribes to pass cars for MOT.
An anonymous whistleblower reported that up to £150 cash can buy a pass certificate when put into the right hands, according to the Belfast Telegraph.
“I believe public safety is at risk and the public has the right to know,” the man, who operates a business that does MOT testing, told the publication.
“I have no doubt that this is a problem which is occurring across the entire testing agency.”
Cars with severe mechanical issues, from excessive rot to damaged brakes, could potentially be passed for cash.
The businessman said that because approximately half the tests rely on visual checks, it would be possible to scam a passing result.
The Department for Infrastructure responded: “The issues raised are being dealt with in line with existing procedures.”
