Volvo’s upcoming driver-facing cameras raises serious concerns

"Spy cameras" to be introduced as an option on Volvo models

Volvo’s upcoming driver-facing cameras raises serious concerns
Cameras analysing speed limits will be ever more important when new regulations come into force.

Volvo is developing in-car cameras to monitor driver behaviour and biometrics, it has been revealed.

The carmaker claims the smart cameras will bring a host of benefits to owners in the same way that modern mobile phones and wearable tech monitor your health.

Speaking to CAR Magazine, Volvo’s chief digital officer, Atif Rafiq said: “They’re very advanced these days: they can determine a driver’s glucose levels by looking at their pupils, so could call a loved one or hospital if it detected a health problem.

“Cars will understand your state and destress you on your way back from work.”

Volvo has said the cameras will become an option on its range of cars but added that they won’t be available until after 2020.

Atif added: “Cameras can be used for video conferencing and ID purposes too.

“Your car will recognise you and set your Google apps, climate control and seating position for you.”

While Volvo say the footage will be anonymised and not shared, critics have raised concerns over how the cameras could be used.

If my car had one of those, it would be getting covered with a piece of black tape.
