Broken coil springs can damage surrounding parts, warns Febi

Supplier says most failure is linked to corrosion, especially on salted roads

Broken coil springs can damage surrounding parts, warns Febi
Febi spring and box.

Febi Bilstein supplies a range of over 300 coil springs for a variety of vehicle makes and models including Ford, Mercedes and Renault.

Over time, coil springs can wear, diminishing their performance ability and leading to less comfortable ride quality, according to the supplier.

On older cars, damage caused by spring failure was usually limited to the spring.

However, on modern cars, which have bigger or wider wheels for better looks and handling, the spring is much closer to the tyre sidewall.

This means that a broken spring is more likely to cause further damage to the tyre and surrounding parts.

Signs of a failed or worn coil spring:
  • Vehicle is unbalanced – coil springs help to balance the vehicle, so if one has failed, the vehicle will appear higher on one side; this can affect the braking and steering capabilities of the vehicle
  • Uneven tyre wear – whilst uneven tyres can be caused by a variety of issues, one of the most common reasons is a castor or camber alignment issue, which is often caused by broken coil springs
