100 years of Bosch batteries: A history of technological innovations

Back in 1922, Bosch started producing motorcycle batteries.

In 1927, the first Bosch car batteries were launched and has since continuously expanded its
range, adjusting it to changing market requirements and new technological possibilities.

As of the 1960s, for instance, car batteries were equipped with plastic housings and state-of-charge indicators.

High-performance cold-start batteries for diesel vehicles and thin-plate batteries soon complemented the range.

As of 1970, batteries were equipped with diagnostic plugs for checkups.

In 1983, the use of calcium-based alloys for the battery grids resulted in the first maintenance-free starter batteries for cars.

In the early 2000s, powerful AGM batteries were launched for vehicles equipped with start/stop systems.

In 2016, the Bosch lithium-ion motorcycle battery was granted the Automechanika Innovation Award.

Since 2019, Bosch also offers commercial-vehicle AGM batteries.

Equipped with modern technologies, Bosch batteries reliably supply many different types of vehicles with the energy they need and over extended periods of time.

This is particularly true for the powerful Bosch AGM or EFB batteries.

At AGM batteries, the battery acid is absorbed by micro-fiberglass mats.

This increases the battery service life and its deep-cycle resistance – a clear advantage for the consistent performance of start/stop systems and in case of high consumption during standstill.

Enhanced flooded batteries (EFB) are particularly deep-cycle-resistant.

Both types of batteries feature an outstanding charge acceptance and a particularly high cold starting performance.

Since 2019, Bosch also develops and produces 48-volt batteries for the original-equipment service of mild hybrid vehicles.
