As the temperatures start to rise and the days become longer and brighter, Swarfega is warning mobile technicians and roadside patrols about the dangers of being exposed harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

Working outdoors could lead to one death and around five new cases of melanoma skin cancer a week, according to a recent study by Imperial College London.

Swarfega say mobile workers are still exposed to dangerous UV rays – even when it’s overcast – with up to 80 per cent of the sun’s rays passing through clouds.

A Swarfega spokesperson said: “Exposure to UV radiation from the sun can cause serious skin damage, including sun burn, blistering, and premature ageing.

“In the long term, it can lead to skin cancer; one of the most common forms of cancer with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed in the UK every year.”

Protect yourself from UV rays

  1. Avoid direct sunlight, especially between the hours of 11am and 3pm.
  2. If this isn’t possible, covering up with appropriate clothing and a hat can be the most effective barrier between the sun and the skin.
  3. Where your skin is exposed, apply a broad spectrum, high SPF sun cream.

Swarfega recommends mobile technicians take the ‘5-S approach’.

Slip on sun protection clothing; covering up with appropriate clothing is often the most effective barrier protection for the skin.

Slop on minimum of SPF30 sun cream and make sure it’s broad spectrum.

Slap on a hat and neck protection; just like the right clothing a hat and neck protection provide a great barrier to prevent over-exposure.

Slide on some sunglasses and shade from the sun when possible.
