Skincare brand reminisces on how the world worked in 1947

Swarfega looks back on 71 years of success
Swarfega has interacted with some of UK's biggest celebrities through its social media presence.

In the year of one of the worst winters on record, royal weddings and independence, Swarfega creator Audley Bowdler Williamson was busy creating Swarfega’s iconic green gel.

In 1947, a pint of beer would have set you back a mere 1s4d, petrol was 2s2d a gallon and a house was around £1800.

Times were hard though, with rationing still in place.

It was also the year of Queen Elizabeth’s wedding to Prince Phillip – but even Her Majesty was subject to rationing rules, using clothing coupons to pay for her dress.

Although that royal couple are still going strong, you might think that wartime meant a lot of hasty marriages back in the 1940s – and you’d be right.

Divorces were ten times pre-war figures in 1947.

Some countries that were previously part of the British Empire also gained their independence in ’47 – most notably India and Pakistan.

In the footballing world, Liverpool were league champions, and Charlton Athletic won the FA Cup – meanwhile, England batsman Denis Compton scored more runs in a single season than any other cricketer!

After the war, non-essential motoring and travel abroad was banned.

Wondering how people entertained themselves?

The very first Edinburgh Festival was staged in the August of ’47, with over 800 artists from 20 countries.

Despite the restrictions on motoring, Swarfega’s founder Williamson was convinced that motorised transport was the future.

With experience of how harsh handwashing and contaminants could affect those working with vehicles, he set about creating a hand cleaner that would do the job, but keep the skin’s natural oils intact.

The rest is history.
