The Master HGV split bush kit, available from Sykes-Pickavant has been dubbed as a best seller for removal and installation of split and spring eye bushes on HGVs.
Many modern trucks are fitted with silent bushes which are made up of a split outer steel casing bonded to a rubber shock absorber inner section.
There are two steel end caps and an inner steel tube bonded to the construction to make up the full assembly.
This type of bush is hard wearing and provides flexibility within the suspension to assist in the shock absorbing qualities of the suspension.
However the removal and more specifically the replacement of this type of bush is impossible without the correct equipment.
The Sykes-Pickavant master HGV split bush kit uses a unique clamping system and a series of shell sleeves for different applications.
A Sykes-Pickavant spokesperson said: “This system can cover a range of bush sizes from 56mm to 75mm diameter.
“The clamp is in two halves and is closed together around the bush using the 4 x 10mm studs and nuts.
“This ensures a high degree of compression around the full circumference of the bush without the risk of damage during the insertion process.
“Prior to replacing the bushes, the worn out bushes must be removed and it can be very stubborn to do so in-situ without a great deal of preparatory disassembly work to allow clear access.
“Access to these bushes can be severely hampered due to the many components attached to the chassis in and around the suspension system making it impossible to use large maintenance equipment.”
The Sykes-Pickavnat kit uses a compact 12 tonne hydraulic ram extraction system to allow the operator to work in a limited access environment and reduce the amount of disassembly work required.
The compact ram supplied with the kit is ideal for use due to the limited space available with most split bush applications, however a longer (40mm) travel ram is also available as part number 18792500 which is not supplied as standard due to it being too large for most truck access.
The 18797000 ensures the bush is compressed prior to insertion to prevent it from opening up at the rear when being forced into the spring eye, saving the operator time and money.
“If the bush isn’t sufficiently compressed it can de-laminate and be destroyed before assembly, with each bush costing over £100 each it’s crucial to get this right first time and our solution makes it all the easier to do so,” the spokesperson added.
“The condition of the bushes is checked annually as part of the vehicle’s MOT and if any wear is found then these must be replaced before the vehicle can be allowed back on the public roads.
“With major changes coming into force this year, the 18797000 is proving to be one of many Sykes-Pickavant products ideal for preparing the vehicle for its MOT.”
