Sykes-Pickavant has introduced a VW stud torque adaptor to help technicians tackle corroded VAG timing belt tensioner mounting studs.
Premature failure of timing belt tensioner mounting studs across the VAG group can occur due to the use of a steel stud and alloy head, according to the supplier.
It says a corrosion bond can take place due to oxidisation, making it difficult to remove without the correct tool.
A Sykes-Pickavant spokesperson said: “The 02253000 VW stud torque adaptor has been given the seal of approval from Schaeffler and is suitable for use on steel timing belt tensioner mounting studs which screw into the cylinder head on most 1.9 and 2l TDi VAG applications with M8 fine and M8 to M10 coarse stepped studs.”
VAG recommendations
VAG recommends that the stud should be replaced during the toothed belt service change interval.
Particular care should be taken to ensure that all aluminium deposits resulting from stud removal are sufficiently cleared and that the stud hole is investigated for possible thread damage or other contaminants.
When replacing the stud it must be torqued to the manufacturers recommended value (usually around 15Nm), using a calibrated torque wrench.
Failure to do so can result in the stud working loose and releasing the timing belt tensioner or vibrating with the cyclic stress and snapping off.
Either of these eventualities can lead to catastrophic engine damage.
