A mechanic from Leeds has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and using a motor vehicle without third party insurance.

Ashley P Roberts was driving a silver BMW on trade plates when he was stopped by police in Leeds city centre. When the police approached the vehicle, Mr Roberts drove off, which led to a high-speed chase through the city.

The court heard how Mr Roberts, who has a previous conviction for dangerous driving, 14 convictions for driving while disqualified and 11 for driving without insurance, hit speeds of 70mph in 30mph zones. He also jumped multiple red lights, and drove across central reservations into oncoming traffic, forcing other drivers to move out of his way.

The BMW was later found abandoned, but police tracked Mr Roberts to a retail park, where he was arrested.

The judge, Recorder Leila Benyounes, told Mr Roberts: “This was a prolonged course of dangerous driving that involved a police chase and you attempting to evade police.”

Sentencing him to 18 months in prison, suspended for 24 months, Recorder Benyounes added: “Mr Roberts, you have been given a chance – don’t waste it.”
