A mechanic from Oxfordshire has appeared in court charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving after flipping a customer’s Volkswagen Golf while demonstrating the car’s new braking system.
Oxford Magistrates Court heard how Richard Masters was taking his customer out for a ‘demonstration ride’ in Wallingford when the incident took place. After accelerating and then braking heavily, the wheels locked up, forcing the car into a spin.
The customer, who was travelling in the front passenger seat, was left with a broken back after the Golf ended up in a ditch.
District Judge Kamlesh Rana granted the mechanic unconditional bail, and said: “Mr Masters, I take the view that this matter is too serious for me to deal with this case.”
Masters will appear Oxford Crown Court on 31 August for a plea and trial preparation hearing. If found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a mandatory ban from driving.
