A mechanic has been ordered to pay compensation, complete 180 hours of unpaid work and has been banned from driving after he crashed a customer's car.

Khalid Baig, 32, took the keys of a customer’s Toyota Yaris when he needed to get home but his journey came to an abrupt halt after smashing the car into two other vehicles and three people.

Police were called to the scene and paramedics also attended to treat three people for leg injuries.

When questioned, Baig admitted that he did not have permission to drive the car, the owner of which was on holiday and had booked their car in for work at Treads Tyres.

Nobody involved required hospital treatment.

He appeared before Salford magistrates court and admitted to taking a car without the owner’s consent, driving without insurance and driving without due care.

Baig was banned from driving for a year, ordered to complete 180 hours unpaid work and pay a total of £600 in compensation to the people who were injured.
