Two people were hospitalised after fire broke out at a car repair business on a Hertfordshire industrial estate.

All three emergency services, including five fire engines were on-scene at Bishop’s Stortford at lunchtime on Friday (May 28).

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said they were called at 12.57pm to a fire in a commercial unit used as a car workshop and that the building was heavily smoke-logged.

Fire service control sent both crews from Bishop’s Stortford and from Hertford, and one from Stevenage.Six sets of breathing apparatus, three hose reels and one covering jet were used to extinguish the fire.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “An ambulance and three vehicles from the hazardous area response team attended a building fire on Raynham Road in Bishop’s Stortford just before 1.30pm today.

“Two patients were transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital [in Harlow] for further assessment and treatment.”

Peter Hilton started the business from his parents’ double garage in 1984.

It is now the largest manufacturer-approved vehicle repairer in the UK, approved by more than 20 of the country’s most prestigious brands.

It employs 80 staff and repairs more than 10,000 cars a year.
