Putting the TUNAP DPF cleaner to the test for GW Views is Anthony Pickering of Cypress Autoservices in Lowestoft.
TUNAP’s in situ DPF cleaner promises to save both time and money and is recommended by the Verification of Emission Reduction Technologies (VERT) association as an effective solution for DPF cleaning.
It’s a system that Anthony was keen to try, having used a number of other DPF cleaning methods in the past “with varying success”.
He added: “I have heard good things about TUNAP and their products during discussions with fellow technicians within the trade.”
Anthony was keen to emphasise that “a clean is only part of the repair process” and explained that it’s essential workshops find the cause of the DPF blockages.
He said: “Investigating the root cause of the blocked DPF, whether it’s a vehicle fault or incorrect driving style, must be established.
“Unfortunately, if the DPF has suffered mechanical damage such as fusion through overheating replacement is the only method of repair.”
Unboxing TUNAP’s DPF cleaner
Inside the kit, Anthony found everything he needed including a service information pack with notes on precautions to take prior to treatment and various airline couplers to ensure correct use and best results.
“It’s not an issue if they were not contained in the box but it shows the thought into the quality of this product,” Anthony notes.
To put the cleaner through its paces, Anthony had a Mazda 6 with a long history of DPF issues and had been subjected to a number of forced regenerations, replaced temperature sensors and even DPF replacement.
“There were two underlying issues,” Anthony explained.
“One was an intermittent issue with the DPF pressure sensor and it became apparent that the vehicle was only used for short journeys which was not allowing the DPF to naturally regenerate.”
Easy to apply
Perhaps one of the biggest perks of the TUNAP DPF cleaner is that it’s incredibly easy to apply and without having to remove the filter.
The cleaning process itself can be completed in around an hour.
Anthony selected an appropriate DPF access point, which is generally either a temperature sensor or a DPF pressure pipe.
Using the spraying probe with MF931 cleaner spray Anthony applied the solution inside the filter in five seconds bursts until around a litre had been applied.
To follow this, Anthony treated the internals with MF932 rinsing solution.
He said: “Once the cleaner and rinsing solution were used, I reassembled, cleared the fault codes and allowed the vehicle to run for 15 minutes to allow the product to evaporate.
“At this point, you’d need to carry out any DPF corrections via a scan tool and perform either a forced regeneration or a 30 minute road test to allow a passive regeneration to take place.”
DPF differential pressure drop
After a road test in the Mazda, Anthony had reported a significant drop in DPF differential pressure.
“Before the clean the max pressure on acceleration was 380mbar, which isn’t the highest I have seen but it shows a fair amount of blockage.
“After the TUNAP DPF clean, the max pressure on acceleration was 110mbar.”
The results suggest the cleaner successfully removed a significant amount of soot and ash from inside the DPF.
Anthony has since mirrored the successful results seen on the Mazda on a number of other vehicles in his workshop.
Concluding his review, Anthony said: “As a package, the TUNAP DPF cleaner is excellent and I’d give it a five out of five rating.
“I’d highly recommend it for its ease of use.”
