The Independent Garage Association (IGA), has issued a ‘scam warning’ after one of its members was contacted by someone pretending to be be linked with the trade body.
The garage member received a call from an ‘alarm company’ falsely claiming to be associated with the IGA.
The call was quickly found to be bogus after suspicion prompted the garage to contact the IGA directly.
Writing to members, IGA chief executive Stuart James said: “The IGA has been contacted by a member regarding a call they received from an unknown individual, purporting to be calling from an alarm company and falsely claiming to be associated with the RMI.

“The member sensed that something wasn’t quite right and called the IGA to check, as they felt the caller was fishing to establish if the garage had an up-to-date alarm and CCTV system, possibly to see if the premises were vulnerable.
“We would like to remind members to be cautious of unsolicited calls from organisations claiming to be associated with the IGA or RMI, or seeking potentially sensitive information.”
The IGA has been unable to contact the caller or locate the company.
