Mintex Racing-supported driver Joe Dalgarno says he is encouraged by his pace despite a challenging first half of the Type R Trophy.

The 21-year-old graduated from winning the MG ZR Trophy championship in 2022 to the Type R Trophy for the 2023 season, a one-make series for Honda Civic Type R EP3 models, built from 2001 to 2005.

Dalgarno has received support from the iconic racing brake manufacturer and is running with Mintex brake discs and pads aboard the number 93 Type R.

The first half of the season hasn’t entirely gone Dalgarno’s way, and with three of the six race weekends complete, he is in the second half of the championship points table after some mechanical faults marred his opening races.

Joe Dalgarno, Type R Trophy driver and former MG ZR Trophy champion, said: “Even as early as Brands Hatch we were showing glimpses of pace including a fantastic qualifying effort which got us up into 12th of 32 cars.

“A technical infringement meant we started the race last, but I was able to make up 15 places in the race, the most fun I’ve had in the car so far. The speed is there; just some mechanical issues have let us down.

“At the mid-season we’ve stripped the engine back to work out what is costing us performance and we’re expecting some of the work we’ve made to pay off for the next few races.”

The Type R Trophy visits six legendary UK motorsport venues with Brands Hatch, Donington and Silverstone all featuring on the championship calendar. Round one kicked off at Croft in North Yorkshire, before rounds at Brands Hatch Indy, and then Mallory Park rounding off the first half of the year.

Remaining rounds of the season take place at Cadwell Park from 8-9 July, Silverstone International from 19-20 August, with the championship finale taking place on Donington Park’s Grand Prix circuit on Saturday 23 September.

The fast nature of the remaining circuits means vehicle performance, and stopping power, are both critical to ensuring a top finish.

Dalgarno added: “I’m really familiar with the high-end performance of Mintex brake pads and discs having run the friction material in the MG ZR Trophy. It’s comfortable and reliable and I can trust the car will be stopped before a corner.”

Richard Barton, category manager for Mintex Racing at TMD Friction, said: “It’s been great to see Joe’s progress since his championship win last year in MGs. The performance of Mintex braking products in the Type R Trophy series is testament to Mintex’s versatility, and it remains the choice of stopping power across so many championships in the UK motorsport ladder.”
