Watch: Theory of noise vibration and harshness explained

In the first of a new series of videos, Pico Automotive has once again partnered with Frank Massey to explain the theory of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and explaining the range NVH tools available for use with a PicoScope.

Frank, along with Pico Automotive’s Steve Smith, define ‘noise’ as an unpleasant or unexpected sound in the wrong place at the wrong time.

‘Vibration’ is any objectionable repetitive motion of an object, back and forth, up and down, or left and right.

‘Harshness’ is a sudden, aggressive suspension feel or lack of ‘give’ in response to a single input.

The new series of videos, which will feature on Garage Wire in the coming weeks, will go on to reveal real examples of how the PicoScope NVH tool can be used to fix everyday problems such as cabin noises, suspension issues, engine noises and propshaft imbalances.
