Drunk mechanic banned after nearly hitting police car

A mechanic from Glasgow who took a customer’s car without permission and narrowly avoided a collision with a police car has been banned from driving for three years.

Damian Loks, who also goes by the name of Marcin Szweda, was driving a Mercedes when he crossed the path of an unmarked police car travelling in the opposite direction. Loks stopped the car, but having given the police a false date of birth, he ran away from the scene.

He was later caught and found to be two-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit. This followed a separate incident in 2021 when he tested positive for cannabis while at the wheel of a Nissan Qashqai.

Loks appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing after admitting to drink-driving, taking a car without the owner’s permission, driving without due care and attention, attempting to pervert the course of justice by running away and giving a false date of birth.

Sentencing, sheriff Patricia Pryce fined him £1,230, disqualified him from driving for three years, and ordered him to do 180 hours of unpaid work.

The sheriff warned him: “Do not breach this order because you are this close to going to jail.”
