Electric car market growth and what independents must do about it

Ignoring the rise of EVs could prove catastrophic for independent garages, warns CarVue

Electric car market growth and what independents must do about it
Electric cars now make up over one per cent of the UK's new car market.

CarVue, an online garage management system, is asking independent garages if they’re ready for what it describes as an ‘electric revolution’ and suggests that ownership costs of electric vehicles (EVs) could be cheaper than conventionally powered cars by 2025.

Experts are predicting that EVs will represent a quarter of all vehicles on the road by 2040.

Alex Knight, marketing director at CarVue, said: “We may have spent a few years doubting the EV; high costs to buy and run, range anxiety and the lack of charging points are all very reasonable objections to electric cars by the everyday motorist.

“But the times are changing.”

According to CarVue, the rise in EVs could prove “catastrophic” for the independent garage owner unless they move with the times.

Prepare now

“Preparing now with EV and hybrid training as the first swathe of vehicles begin to find themselves in the hands of second or even third owners, could prove to be a worthwhile investment,” Alex added.

There are currently only 1,000 mechanics trained to fix EVs in the UK, according to the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).

Alex explained that EVs can contain circuits running at more than three times the 230 volts found in the mains supply which can have serious consequences for untrained technicians.
