The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve directs a small amount of exhaust gases back into the inlet air charge, and lowers the maximum temperature of the burning fuel.
The valve ensures the EGR system is disabled at idle, when it would otherwise lead to erratic idling, and at peak power, when adding exhaust gases would reduce power output.
The EGR valve is likely to stick and become coked up on some applications.
BTN Turbo warns that this can have a significant effect on turbocharger performance.
A faulty EGR valve can result in excessive carbon/soot at the turbine end, causing the VNT mechanism to stick.
Check EGR function
It is important to check the EGR valve is functioning correctly.
If the EGR Valve fails to open it can cause excessive production of nitrogen oxide and erratic idling.
It can also increase fuel consumption and effect performance.
BTN Turbo say possible reasons why the EGR valve may fail to open include blockages, air leaks or a faulty electric switch pressure converter valve.
If the EGR valve fails to close, this may be caused by heavy deposits on the tappet or valve.
The EGR may be damaged through overheating caused by incorrect control, high exhaust back pressure or non-opening blow-off valve.
