Problem job: Merc C230 rough idle and power loss

Cambiare discusses this common fault in its 'tips and tricks' newsletter

Problem job: Merc C230 rough idle and power loss
The air breather hose is prone to splitting but is not visible unless the air filter housing is removed.

Rough idling and a loss of power is a common problem on the Mercedes-Benz C230 Kompressor that often points towards replacing the air mass sensor or ignition coil, Cambiare say.

However, on this particular model replacing these parts may not always cure the fault.

The air breather hose is prone to splitting but is only visible if the air filter housing is removed.

If split, the EML may illuminate and the driver could experience a rough idle and significant loss in engine power.

To rectify the issue, the hosing will need to be replaced.

As the air pressure passing through the hose is very high, Cambiare explain that repairs to the hose are unlikely to be a permanent fix.

Misdiagnosis

Cambiare said: “When investigating any faults, it is important that all aspects of the system are checked.

“Failure to do so can result in misdiagnosis and high return rates.”
