GW is calling on readers to submit pictures and videos of the worst MOT horrors, bad bodges and dangerous defects.
Richard Walford of Newcastle upon Tyne recently took delivery of a Vauxhall Vectra 1.9CDTi after it cut out at 70mph on the motorway.
Just a few days earlier the owner had a friend replace the belt but neglected to tighten the tensioner.
Richard said: “The pistons took a hammering, it’s smashed most of the rockers and even bent the valves, it wasn’t pretty.
“The guy who put the belt on didn’t tighten the tensioner, it continued to run badly before the belt completely disintegrated.”
Can you relate to this story? Have you come across a recent a dangerous defect or bodged job? Tweet your pictures and videos to @GarageWireUK, upload them to the GW Facebook page or email them direct to [email protected].

Oil pump failure common problem

Have seen quite a few of these in that condition (Z19dth) engine and I would suggest the water pump has seized. The water pump should (in my opinion) be replaced with every timing belt kit replacement.

This is just down to poor workmanship and lack of experience or the person not even being qualified. A little vehicle maintenance knowledge can be very dangerous as some people think every job is as changing a set of brake pads.
Unfortunately the owner here has payed the price for someone’s very silly mistake.
Cambelt work should be double and then triple checked using correct timing tools.
