A new model of annual training and test is to replace the former ‘refresher’ course’ from April 2016 to maintain their existing testing status, the DVSA has announced.
All testers must complete the new MOT annual training and annual assessment before the end of March 2017, regardless of their current refresher training status.
The assessment is expected to cost between £25 and £75.
Testers will be responsible for planning and completing the annual assessment between the start of April and the following March each year.
Announcing the move, the agency said: “This is in line with the MOT trade increasingly asking for a more varied and modern approach to training to make it easier to learn in line with individual needs and requirements.
“The new process will follow a continuing professional development model with testers required to complete training and pass an assessment every year for the vehicle classes they test.”

Why should I pay ? No other profession pays to do a job, there may be a shortage of testers after this comes into force.

No one likes to pay but it seems we are stuck with this. My pal is a Financial Adviser and he has to pay about £ 1600 on annual training.

I’m in the IT sector and because of the changing nature of our business we have to pay for most of our careers on training and certification. If your business is successful then ongoing training and professional development is a must to keep it successful.

We run a small independent MOT station with three full time testers and have done so for the last 25 years. Our view is that if this training weeds out the cowboys and costcutters and those who don’t test correctly then it’s a good thing. We’ve chosen a company for our CPD Training as it’s all done online and you can pay monthly which spreads the cost and its been great. Its created a real desire among our testers to get good scores and increase their testing knowledge and has been the cause of some good debates over a cuppa as to how certain points should be interpreted. We think the DVSA have done the right thing.
