Qualified automotive engineers, Luke Downing from Launceston in Cornwall and John Straughan from Berwick-upon-Tweed found a winning silver sensor when respectively they ordered an air mass sensor for a Peugeot Expert from supplying factor Mill Auto and a DPF sensor for a Nissan supplied by Dingbro.

Having been let down in the past by fitting what turned out to be a defective sensor supplied by a competitor, Luke has subsequently always relied on HELLA for this sort of specialist electronic part.

“Having become familiar with HELLA during my degree course at Plymouth University, where the company featured as part of our online training module, I know it’s a brand that I can trust,” said Luke.

“It was normal for me to order a HELLA air mass sensor, as I knew the quality would be first rate and the part would fit and perform as intended.

“Although it might cost a little more than some others, you get what you pay for and it’s just a false economy to try and save a bit of money on such an important part, so why bother?”

A point also raised by John, who said: “We carry out a lot of DPF remedial work and it doesn’t matter if the vehicle is an old runabout or nearly new, the sensor has to be a quality replacement from a recognised original equipment manufacturer, so to see the HELLA box, we knew it would do the job.”

“In the 25 years I’ve run the business, I don’t think we’ve ever won anything, so it’s great for me and the lads.”

After announcing the prize winners, Helen Goldingay, HELLA’s senior head of marketing and communications, said: “Although they might have missed out on the top prize, as silver winners, Luke and John will be recipients of a fantastic Caso MG20 microwave and grill, which will take pride of place in their workshop kitchens and so benefit the whole L Downing Automotive Engineers and JS45 teams and goes to prove that HELLA truly is the workshops’ friend.

“There are still more winning sensors in circulation, so in addition to what Luke says about fitting a quality product that can be completely relied upon, there is still £2,000 up for grabs for a lucky technician who wants to fit a quality part and potentially reap a financial reward to boot.”
