‘Smart’ garages are the future, says Autodata
The smart workshop: Autodata's vision of the future.

Entering the automotive industry over 42 years ago as a vehicle manual publisher, the technical information provider’s tools have delivered comprehensive, innovative and business focused technical data to the aftermarket, supporting and increasing the efficiency of over 65 per cent of garages in the UK.

As well as the trusted workshop tool, Autodata is also now enabling a new wave of technology and intelligence across the world with a technical product, known as an API.

It allows businesses and developers to power their own products with Autodata’s technical information; creating a new generation of digital solutions, new intelligent tools and new consumer applications – potentially all connected.

Autodata said: “While consumers are generally excited and ready for connected and autonomous vehicles, the aftermarket certainly has a few concerns around the increasing complexity and the detailed knowledge required.

“However, it’s time to start seeing new vehicle technology as opportunities and preparing your workshop for the future.”

‘Workshop of the future’

The garage of the future is a smart garage, according to Autodata: “Workshops need to keep up with the technological advancements in the automotive industry, not just to survive, but also to compete effectively.

“Embedding the right tools and processes in your workshop will increase workshop efficiency, and enhance your ability to consistently deliver excellent services to your customers.

“Smart processes, such as automated notifications will inform technicians of important information that they may not be aware they need to know.

“A smart garage will equip technicians with all the tools they need to carry out their jobs confidently and efficiently, without worrying that they have made costly mistakes on modern vehicles.

“The time spent on each vehicle will be less; therefore technicians will be able to work on more vehicles in less time, increasing the revenue of the workshop.

“Importantly, this new way of working will also allow workshops to build better customer relationships by automatically connecting to the customers’ vehicle and personal smart devices to send important and relevant information.”

‘New level of intelligence’

Autodata say new consumer-facing apps that allow workshops to feed information and alerts directly to customers’ smart devices will increase pricing transparency, empower consumers with more knowledge and the ability to locate and connect to workshops easily.

“Consumers will be more confident that workshops not only have the ability, but also the resources, to conduct services, maintenances, repairs, and diagnostics on their vehicles.

“Embracing new technologies will benefit individual workshops, technicians and customers, as well as the entire automotive aftermarket.

“As a result of new connected workflows, workshops will become more transparent, therefore increasing consumer trust in the aftermarket as a whole.”
