The age of vehicles that connect to the internet to share information with devices inside and outside of the vehicle is here.
Commonly known as the ‘connected car’, these vehicles are capable of sending live data directly to garages who can diagnose any problems remotely.
Approved Garages say this technology offers a range of benefits for motorists as well as opportunities for independent garages.
Real threat
Organisations such as the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Organisation warn that the connected car revolution represents a threat for independents and an opportunity for VMs to try and undermine the motorist’s right to choose.
Connected car data could be used to push dealership services to drivers ahead of independent alternatives.

Approved Garages advise independents to display a Right2Choose poster in their premises and give customers Right2Choose leaflets.
The garage network said: “Right2Choose is simply that.
“Whatever the complexity of their vehicle and whatever the future of the connected car, drivers should always have the right to have their car serviced or repaired in any qualified garage, without it invalidating their warranty.
“In the era of the connected car, promoting that message is more important than ever.”
