Problems and solutions for P0171 and P0480 fault codes

European Exhaust & Catalyst (EEC) is one of the largest manufacturers of emissions products in the UK.

It’s the only European manufacturer to apply all precious metals to its catalyst and DPF products through its own UK-based coating facility.

Here, it provides technical information on two fault codes: P0171 and P0480.

Fault code: P0171 (Lean condition)

Possible causes:

  • Vacuum leaks
  • Faulty EGR valve or other parts of EGR system
  • Low fuel pressure
  • Clogged up catalytic converter

Possible solutions:

  • Inspect all vacuum pipes and EGR system
  • Inspect or test the intake manifold gaskets for leakage
  • Check for proper fuel pressure
  • Replace the catalyst if neccesary

Fault code: P0480 (Cooling fan relay 1 control circuit)

Symptoms:

  • The check engine light will be on
  • The temperature may rise enough to overheat the vehicle if the fan is not operating

Possible causes:

  • Poor electrical connection in the fan circuit
  • Failed fan control relay has failed
  • Failed coolant temperature sensor
  • Faulty AC pressure switch

Possible solutions:

  • Replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor
  • Repairing or replacing of the fan wiring
  • Repairing electrical connection issues
  • Replacing AC pressure switch
  • Replacing the fan control relay
