Investigation reignites Vauxhall fire scandal

Corsa owners call for answers just months after the VM issued a second recall for Zafiras after first fix failed

Investigation reignites Vauxhall fire scandal
Vauxhall is facing calls to explain why it is not taking more action over claim some of its Cora D models have gone up in flames.

Vauxhall is once again facing criticism after a BBC Watchdog investigation highlighted seven cases where a Vauxhall Corsa D had burst into flames.

Last year, the company recalled 234,938 Zafira B models in the UK following a spate of fires and then issued the recall for a second time in May after it emerged that so-called repaired vehicles were still going up in flames.

Now owners of Corsa D models built between 2006 and 2014 are also reporting cases of the vehicle catching fire.

Back in April, Vauxhall identified a fault with the braking system in some 1.4 litre petrol Corsa D models where water was able to get into the electronics and cause a fire, prompting a recall of 2,767 affected vehicles.

Of the seven Corsa cases presented in the BBC Watchdog programme which first aired last week, four fell outside of the existing recall criteria.

In response, Vauxhall has said that it “takes any report of fire very seriously” and adds that “fires can occur for a wide variety of reasons”.

It said: “Following the Zafira B issue we strengthened our processes but even so it is not always possible to arrange an inspection.

“When an inspection is possible the destructive nature of fire can make the process of identifying a pattern of fires with a common root cause very challenging.

“Better access to vehicle fire data could help manufacturers with early detection of safety issues.

“We are therefore working through our industry body to understand how manufacturers can gain access to data in order to build a more complete picture of potential issues.”

More than 700,000 Corsa D models were sold between 2006 and 2014.

  1. If Vauxhall start recalling the Corsa D then Fiat need to start recalling the grande Punto as they are both using the same wiring loom and heater motor resisters! Fiat will only sell the full wiring loom but Vauxhall will sell you just the plug that melts and burns out!
