Lindgren pipped to Speedway World title

NGK-sponsored Freddie Lindgren, who has narrowly failed in his bid to become the 2023 FIM World Speedway champion, securing the Speedway GP World Championship silver medal, was delighted to finish in the series’ top two for the first time, having won two bronze medals in 2018 and 2020.

The Swedish star finished second at the DeWalt FIM Speedway GP of Poland behind Polish star Bartosz Zmarzlik who became the sport’s seventh four-time FIM Speedway world champion.

Zmarzlik won his fourth Speedway GP crown in five years when he finished first in the final in Torun ahead of Lindgren, who was second, with Denmark’s Leon Madsen third and Poland’s Patryk Dudek fourth.

Speaking on the official Speedway GP website, Lindgren said: “I am very proud of my season. I have been very consistent this season. I have made most of the finals and this is my best finish so far in my career. I am very proud of that.

“I still have a lot of motivation. I really feel I can get better and develop myself. I have a lot of motivation to do it. I am going to work really hard in the winter and hopefully come out of next year better than this year. That’s my aim and we will see if it happens.”

Fellow NGK-sponsored riders Robert Lambert finished in sixth place in the championship to secure his place in next year’s title race, while Dan Bewley was seventh and Tai Woffinden eleventh.

Becca Knight, marketing manager of Niterra UK Ltd, home of the NGK brand, said: “Freddie fought all the way but unfortunately came up just short, He pushed Bartosz Zmarzlik all the way and I’m sure he is determined to go one step better next year.”
