British drivers could be massively caught out by their annual MOT test with failures leading to costly new parts for cash-strapped road users.

As road users continue to struggle due to the crisis in the cost of living, motorists who are having difficulty affording MOT tests have been given a simple solution.

Daniel Meeghan, UK Country Manager of car diagnostic scanner Carly, has urged struggling road users not to “bury their head in the sand” when fees get too high.

In a simple hack, Daniel has encouraged motorists to diagnose issues ahead of their MOT test so they are aware of how much they are likely to splash out.

In an MOT test, not all issues have to be fixed immediately to keep a car on the road meaning vehicle owners can delay some repairs if they wish.

Advisories are simply warnings to drivers that parts are on their way out and may need fixing over the course of the next 12 months.

Daniel said: “If you find car costs a great source of anxiety, don’t bury your head in the sand about your car’s health before the MOT test.

“It is better to go into the garage with a clearer picture of the car’s health so that you are better prepared.

“Understanding your car’s health allows you to plan, all issues can be prioritised once you understand their significance, meaning not all issues need to be fixed immediately.”

Previous research from Motorpoint found a whopping 2.5 million road users have considered ditching their cars due to the rising cost of motoring.

This is in response to a recent survey that revealed 59% of drivers think operating a car currently is more expensive than it was in the past.

A startling 35% of respondents said they were worried about price hikes, and a fifth said they were having trouble keeping up with operating expenses.

MOT tests themselves aren’t too expensive with Asda Motoring among firms charging drivers the standard £54.85 to conduct an examination.

However, if a car is found to be in a dangerous condition motorists could be forced to pay out hundreds or even thousands of pounds just to get the car back on the road.

Daniel added: “Familiarise yourself with the MOT test criteria to understand what inspectors will check for. Many elements, such as lights, brakes, and tyres, can be easily inspected at home by eye.”
