Milestone as garages complete ten million tests on new MOT system

Over ten million tests have been carried out using the online MOT testing service, DVSA announces

Milestone as garages complete ten million tests on new MOT system
The DVSA says the new MOT testing service offers garages greater flexibility.

Garages across the country have completed ten million tests since the new system was launched earlier this year.

DVSA say the new service, which is 50 per cent cheaper for it to run, offers garages greater flexibility.

Alex Fiddes, DVSA MOT Group Service Manager, said: “With ten million tests now successfully completed, we are confident that garages and their customers are now benefiting from a faster and more cost effective service.”

‘Modern world’

Esmond Kielty, a member of the Vehicle Testing Station Council and CEO of Carlisle Auto Repairs Ltd, said: “I think the new service has moved us into the modern world, it’s faster and more user-friendly.

“It provides my testers with a reliable MOT system with flexibility about where they can record information; they are not stuck in one place in the garage because they can now use tablets.

“As an owner I can order slots, as many or little as I want according to my business projections.

“I can also review MOT manuals and can do all this from home if it suits me.”

Continued development

The new service, which the DVSA has described as ‘deliberately basic’, will continue to be developed in-line with user feedback.

DVSA’s Head of MOT Modernisation, Neil Barlow, said: “Our core priority is providing a stable and resilient service which allows testers to carry out tests.

“For the most part, we think we’ve achieved those aims over the past couple of months and we’ve managed to keep the service up and running and testers testing throughout this period.

“We’re also working hard to make sure the service can cope with the kinds of technical problems which all web-based services have to face and overcome on a consistent daily basis.”

Technical problems

Known problems with the MOT testing service are published on the DVSA’s website here.

Recent issues include slot balance problems and incorrect expiry dates appearing on certificates.

The DVSA is reminding all test stations to report technical issues to the MOT testing service help desk on 0330 123 5654.

  3. First day MOT Modernisation worked ok, second day was very slow operating system, third day system down completely, however DVSA had given prior notice about the new system and I had already viewed and tried the system from home, “Not MOT Testing”, administration system only, I decided to copy CT documents to my desktop which proved a wise decision. When the system initially went down I was for the first half an hour or so not sure what to do, I couldn’t remember if DVSA had advised us what to do or not, so I decided to ring them, that didn’t work, half an hour past and I decided to check my emails while I was doing nothing wondering what I should do about MOT Modernisation not working, then a CT code was seen in my email account, I knew then what to do, but I had no access to CT documents at work, therefore a drive home a couple of miles to print off some CT documents and the Testing Station was up and running as if nothing had broken down, ok a little time lost, but we lost no customers or their tests being completed.

Overall I think there is room for improvements as with anything, I am sure DVSA will continue to move forwards with the new system, even if they don’t include ALL VTS Council Members in the process.
I am only giving advice here from the NT’s perspective as I understand that AE’s have had other problems with the system that I cannot comment on, but from the nominated testers point of view, its a very good straight forward easy web based system to work with in my opinion for NT’s with IT skills.
