Classic car safety called into question

Leading YouTube mechanic Scotty Kilmer, sparked disagreement among several motorists

Classic car safety called into question

Kilmer suggested that it might not be a good idea to own a classic car if safety is a priority, as many classics lack modern safety features such as bodywork crumple zones, anti-locking brakes and airbags.

However, many motorists have defended their classic cars, arguing that they would not easily give up their vehicles. One YouTube viewer, @Nick41622, commented, “Older cars will outlast any new cars.”

Another viewer, @jesseholden8686, added, “I agree to a point. Thanks, Scotty but I still prefer older vehicles with steel-cut gears for safety when dealing with ice, snow, and mountain passes.”

A third viewer remarked, “Don’t recall people being blasted with shrapnel in their cars back in the good old days of tanklike gas guzzlers.”

Kilmer highlighted safety concerns in a YouTube video explaining why newer cars are safer than older ones. He pointed out that modern cars have airbags all over the place and crumple zones, which absorb the energy in a crash instead of the driver. He also noted that modern cars have anti-lock braking and traction control systems to prevent accidents in the first place.

Despite Kilmer’s views, some of his YouTube fans were quick to accept his point of view, acknowledging the increase in safety over the last few years.

YouTube viewer @davinp said, “Also, newer cars have automatic emergency braking as part of the pre-collision system, also lane departure alert/keeping and adaptive cruise control.”
