Wight Tyres of Ryde spotted a Facebook post which showed the dumped tyres at the Brading Down Local Nature Reserve, which lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Posting on Facebook, a spokesperson for the tyre fitters said: “We saw a post on the Isle of Wight Community Information page on Sunday that a walker had posted showing a number of tyres that had been illegally fly-tipped in Brading.

“After getting the what3words location we attended to remove them and ensure they were disposed of in the correct manner using a licensed waste facility like we do with all of our tyres.”

Tyre fitter Brad removed 20 tyres from the location and loaded them into his van, before paying the appropriate fee for disposal.

Sending a message to the fly-tippers, Wight Tyres said: “If the person fly-tipping these is reading this – please don’t do it again. Come and see us and ask about tyre disposal. We would rather offer you disposals at cost price than see the landscape blotted!”

In 2022, a man was given an 11-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to the dumping of 51 tonnes of tyres in Scotland.

Last year, the maximum on-the-spot fine for fly-tipping was increased to £1,000 as part of a crackdown on anti-social behaviour. The Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey said: “Everyone loathes litter louts and people who dump rubbish. We are increasing the penalties local councils can apply for this behaviour that spoils our streets and harms nature.”

In more serious cases, fly-tippers can be fined up to £50,000 in Magistrates’ Courts and face unlimited fines in higher courts, as well as community punishment orders or prison sentences of up to five years.
