A tyre safety pilot study which collected around 155,000 readings at Keel Services on the M6 has found that more than a quarter of Britain’s cars have at least one tyre that is dangerously under-inflated.
The research by technology firm WheelRight also found that the majority of HGVs are running with at least one under-inflated tyre.
According to figures released by the Road Safety Observatory in April 2014, the UK currently sees around 25 deaths and 1,500 serious injuries a year due to poorly inflated or defective tyres.
What’s more, Highways England data shows that 21 per cent of all breakdowns that occur could be attributed to a wheel or tyre defect.
