With winter just around the corner, the Good Garage Scheme is encouraging motorists to get their cars professionally checked to ensure that they are safe and reliable in the cold and wet months ahead.

Good Garage Scheme workshops are offering a Winter Check to help drivers protect their vehicles and reduce the danger of accidents, costly repairs and breakdowns.

New research by the UK-wide workshop scheme has found that only a quarter of motorists knew the minimum legal tread limit for tyres was 1.6mm, while almost half said they used their current garage because they trusted them and knew they would give them a good deal.

TV motoring presenter and racing driver, Tiff Needell is helping to get the message out about the Good Garage Scheme Winter Check, taking to the airwaves with a radio campaign to make motorists aware of the importance of getting their cars health checked in readiness for the harsh weather.

The Good Garage Scheme Winter Check includes inspecting the condition of the wiper blades to ensure a clear view of the road ahead in harsh weather conditions.

Winter risk

Not doing so can increase the risk of having a collision, especially if a car’s tyre pressures are low, making it hard to maintain grip and easy to skid on wet and icy roads.

Visibility is also important as the days get shorter, making it essential to check all bulbs to ensure you can see and be seen; as well as inspecting the operation of heaters, windscreen washers and the condition of the wipers.

Cars with low antifreeze levels are also at risk in freezing temperatures, which can cause engine overheating and damage.

Monitoring coolant levels and topping up will ensure a healthy engine over the winter months, as well as ensuring the heater works properly to defrost icy windscreens more quickly.

Expert assessment

The 20-point Winter Check provides an expert assessment of a vehicle’s condition, examining essential areas including the condition and level of the coolant and engine oil, as well as the tyres, wiper blades, windscreen and lights.

One potential issue facing drivers that even motoring expert Tiff was surprised about is the danger of bacteria lurking in air conditioning systems.

To cure this, Good Garage Scheme members can offer a steriliser and deodoriser to create a freshened and bug-free passenger compartment.
